Trump Says Proposed Washington Arch Will Become Military Complex After Request From U.S. Military

President Donald Trump has announced a major change to his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, saying the U.S. military requested that the structure be redesigned to serve a national-security purpose.

Trump said in a September 20 post on Truth Social that he had agreed to transform the planned monument into what he described as a “Military Complex/Triumphal Arch.” According to his announcement, the facility would be designed to house and store large numbers of drones, while also providing positions for snipers on the roof and plaza areas. It would also include storage for sniper ammunition

The proposed arch is planned for Memorial Circle near the Arlington Memorial Bridge, close to Arlington National Cemetery and across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The structure was originally presented as a monumental project connected to the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Trump said the latest changes were made at the “strong request” of the military and were intended to serve national-security needs. However, neither Trump nor the Pentagon has publicly identified a specific threat that would require such a facility at the proposed location. The Defense Department told Reuters that it had nothing to add beyond Trump’s announcement.

The announcement has also raised fresh questions about the project’s design and approval process. Critics have questioned the practicality of operating drones and positioning snipers at a prominent traffic circle located near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and several historic landmarks. 

The arch was already facing legal opposition before the military component was announced. Veterans and preservation groups have challenged the project, arguing that the proposed structure could interfere with the historic visual connection between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. A federal judge has also ordered the administration to provide 48 hours’ notice before carrying out activity at the site, with limited exceptions. 

Trump’s announcement comes as his administration continues efforts to reshape several prominent areas of Washington. The proposed arch is part of a wider collection of construction and redevelopment projects that have generated debate over national security, historic preservation and the future appearance of the U.S. capital.
