“Following Kansas City’s 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones earned an additional $1 million, thanks to an incentive embedded in his contract.”
Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones received an extra $1 million thanks to an incentive in his contract after Kansas City beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC Championship. His base salary for the season was already $19.5 million, minus the $1 million he was docked for sitting out Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins during a contract dispute.
Jones will now have the chance to cap off yet another strong season by winning his third Lombardi Trophy, thanks to the Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl. The 29-year-old DT was also named an All-Pro for the second season in a row.
Jones ended the season with 30 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 13 tackles for loss. He also had 13 pressures, which was the highest mark for any defender in the league all season. The five-time Pro Bowler finished the win over Baltimore with no tackles but applied pressure to quarterback Lamar Jackson on multiple occasions.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at their magnificent best in the first half, and Kansas City’s defense received the benefit of the doubt on several no calls by officials to keep the team alive.Kelce caught 11 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown to once again carry the Chiefs’ offense throughout the game.
The Chiefs led 17-7 at halftime, and Justin Tucker’s 43-yard field goal with 2:34 to play was the only scoring of the second half.In the days leading up to the game against Baltimore fellow Chiefs defensive linemen George Karlaftis spoke about the impact Jones makes for the defense.
‘
He just opens so much stuff and requires so much attention,’ Karlaftis said.Aside from the stuff he does on the field, he’s just a great teammate, great leader. Just such a great presence to have around
