Dre Greenlaw sets the tone for the highly impressive San Francisco 49ers defense. On Sunday, he will face the challenge of dismantling the formidable Mahomes-Kelce connection.
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is a player who lives on the edge.A tone-setter on the 49ers’ defense, Greenlaw’s aggressiveness and extreme physicality can often draw the ire of referees. However, he has taken no greater risk than the decision he made back in the divisional round of the playoffs in San Francisco’s narrow defeat of the Green Bay Packers, when he intercepted Jordan Love for the second time to complete a 24-21 comeback.
He provided his team with a huge scare in doing so, however, unnecessarily surging upfield and attempting to evade defenders in the final seconds in an effort to score, risking a fumble that would have given the Packers another shot.
‘I think he’s glad that it ended the way it did and I don’t think he’ll ever make that mistake again,’ head coach Kyle Shanahan said a day after the game. ‘We didn’t get on him too hard, but he could tell how big of a deal it was after.
We’re very appreciative he made the play, but stuff can flip very fast and you can ruin some of the best plays ever if you give a team any more of a chance. The way that game was going, we didn’t need to give them any more chances. So, I think he learned his lesson. Hopefully we’ll never have to deal with that again.’
But Shanahan and the Niners have since had to deal with significantly more stress, with their postseason campaign taking drama to new heights in last Sunday’s NFC Championship Game with the Detroit Lions
