Cisse was forced out of Green Bay’s 17–14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after suffering a frightening neck injury, with the rookie subsequently undergoing concussion testing.
Considering the circumstances, Packers fans had reason to worry.
But head coach Matt LaFleur has now delivered a much more reassuring update: Cisse passed his concussion evaluation, is not in the concussion protocol, and the Packers do not currently believe the neck injury is a long-term concern.
When Cisse initially left the Tampa Bay game, the immediate concern went beyond an ordinary football injury.
Any situation involving the head or neck demands additional caution, and the fact that Cisse underwent a concussion evaluation naturally raised questions about whether he could enter the NFL’s protocol.
According to LaFleur’s update, that did not happen.
Cisse passed the necessary concussion testing.
That is significant because a player who enters protocol must work through the league’s required return-to-participation process before being cleared for game action.
Cisse, based on the latest update, does not currently face that obstacle.
The focus instead shifts to his neck — and how it responds during the days leading into the Bears game.
This is where the distinction matters.
Not being in concussion protocol does not automatically mean Cisse has been cleared to play in Week 5.
Green Bay still has to monitor the neck injury and determine whether Cisse can practice effectively without experiencing additional discomfort or limitations.
The good news is that LaFleur’s description suggests the Packers aren’t preparing for an extended absence.
That’s a dramatically different outlook from the uncertainty immediately following Sunday’s game.
Cisse’s Week 5 status will now depend largely on how his neck responds as Green Bay moves through practice.
For Packers fans, the injury report later in the week could provide the clearest indication yet.
The timing makes the update particularly important.
Next up is Chicago.
Packers-Bears rarely needs additional drama, but Green Bay enters the rivalry matchup dealing with significant injury concerns on defense.
That makes every healthy defensive back more valuable.
For a rookie cornerback, a rivalry game at Lambeau would also represent another important test.
Chicago will look for mismatches.
Green Bay will need depth.
And depending on the defensive plan, the Packers could ask their secondary to hold up in isolated coverage while the front attempts to create pressure.
